TOMATO PAPPU

INGREDIENTS:

  • Toor dal : 1 cup
  • Turmeric : a pinch
  • Water : 2 cups
  • Onion : 1 no
  • Tomatoes : 3 medium sized and ripe
  • Green chilies : 2 nos
  • Red chili powder : 1 teaspoon
  • Coriander : a little

For - TADKA/TEMPERING/POPU:

  • Mustard seeds : 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds : 1 teaspoon
  • Red chillies : 2nos
  • Curry leaves : 1 sprig
  • Garlic : 4 pods
  • Asafetida/hing/inguva : a pinch
  • Oil/ghee : 1 tablespoon

PROCEDURE:

  • Chop onions, tomatoes and green chillies
  • add toor dal, water, turmeric and the above chopped vegetables in the cooker and pressure cook it
  • Add salt to the cooked dal and mix thoroughly
  • For the tempering add oil in a pan. when the oil is heated add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, crushed garlic pods, broken red chillies, hing, curry leaves (at this stage if you add red chili powder in the popu and immediately add to the dal it tastes even better but make sure it should not burn so, add just before pouring popu/tadka in the dal)
  • add this popu/tadka over the cooked dal and mix well
  • Add some chopped coriander leaves
  • Serve hot with rice, ghee and any fries or appadam
